This Christmas, don’t miss the new lighting of the Sagrada Familia Towers of the Evangelists

The Sagrada Família has seen the culmination of a crucial stage in its majestic construction, namely the completion and illumination of the four impressive Towers of the Evangelists, a momentous milestone in the history of this emblematic basilica.

This milestone has not only marked the completion of a significant architectural stage, but has also united the community around history, art and reflection on the significance of Antoni Gaudí’s magnificent masterpiece. The Sagrada Família, with its Towers of the Evangelists, remains a beacon of inspiration and reflection for all who visit it.

Navidad radiante en la Sagrada Familia

In Christian iconography the towers of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, crowned by the winged figures of the tetramorph, the work of the renowned sculptor Xavier Medina-Campeny, represent the narrators of the life of Jesus. The tower of Matthew, symbolised by the human figure, and the tower of John, with the representation of the eagle, were completed this year, while the towers of Mark, represented by a lion, and Luke, traditionally represented by an ox, were completed in 2022.

These impressive towers surround the central Jesus Tower and reach an imposing height of 135 metres, making them the third tallest in the magnificent structure as a whole.
The illumination of the Towers of the Evangelists, the Virgin Mary’s star and the Nativity and Passion façades will continue to illuminate the hearts of all until the end of the Christmas season.

This achievement not only marks yet another stage in the construction of this prodigious temple, but also symbolises the union of faith, history and art in a legacy that will last for generations.

The Sagrada Família is an exceptional place of worship, both in terms of its origin and foundation and in terms of its purpose. The work of the brilliant architect Antoni Gaudí, it was a project driven by and for the people, and no less than five generations have seen the evolution of the temple in Barcelona. Today, more than 140 years after the first stone was laid, the basilica remains under construction.
