La Palma is inspiring not only for its wonderful landscape, but also the underwater life. The volcanic activity has shaped a world of caves, arches, cliffs, caves and volcanic tubes. The volcanic formations that can be found make up an interesting habitat for an endless number of species.
Because of the marine currents, the water is fresh, extremely deep and rich in species. The underwater visibility reaches up to 50 meters and the water temperatures are around 18 degrees in winter and 25 degrees in summer, being perfect conditions for diving throughout the year.
The La Palma harbour seabed is greatly rich in marine fauna. Those who venture to discover it can find the following species: sea turtles, groupers, mackerels, barracudas, seabream, scorpionfish, salemas, white morrajas, octopus, monkfish, parrotfish, manta rays, perch, moray eels, sea horses, whales, dolphins , sperm whales, flying fish, eels, some species of sharks or cuttlefish.
There are several diving schools in La Palma that rent equipment or organise guided dives. It is also possible to make whale sighting marine excursions.
