What to see in Cancun in one day: the perfect guide to making the most of your visit

By | 4 December, 2025 | 0 comments

Cancun's beach and hotel area

Cancun is synonymous with paradise.

The white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and cosmopolitan ambience make it one of the most fascinating destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. But beyond its natural beauty, this town offers history, culture, gastronomy, adventure and fun, all in one place

If you happen to be staying at one of our Princess hotels in the Riviera Maya and have a free day, Cancun is an excellent option for a day out full of contrasts.

From exploring Mayan archaeological sites to relaxing by the sea or enjoying the vibrant nightlife, every moment here promises an unforgettable experience.

In this guide we offer a complete itinerary for discovering the best of Cancun in just 24 hours… a perfect plan for those seeking to make the most of their visit and take home special memories of this corner of the Caribbean.

Morning: history and culture

El Rey Archaeological Site

Start your day with a touch of Mexican history and tradition.

Very close to the Princess Riviera Maya hotels you’ll find the Cancun Maya Museum, where you can admire archaeological pieces that relate the fascinating history of the Maya civilisation.

Right next door, the San Miguelito archaeological site offers a peaceful walk among ruins surrounded by tropical vegetation.

Should you prefer a more complete experience, you could visit El Rey, another archaeological site within the city, or take a short trip to El Meco, north of Cancun, where you will find well-preserved structures plus spectacular views of the Caribbean.

Midday: gastronomy and beach

After a morning of culture, it’s time to savour the local cuisine.

In the heart of Cancun, Mercado 28 is a must for authentic Mexican dishes such as cochinita pibil tacos, garlic-marinated fish, or a refreshing horchata drink.

Should you feel llike something closer to the sea, restaurants in the hotel zone such as Mar Bella Fish Market or Navíos offer a spectacular culinary experience accompanied by evening views over the Nichupté Lagoon.

If you would like to learn a bit more about the cuisine, click here and discover 7 typical not-to-be-missed Mexican dishes.

And, of course, you can’t miss out on a dip in one of the most iconic local beaches: Playa Delfines, famous for its white sand and lookout point with the colourful letters spelling out ‘Cancun’.

Evening: adventure and nature

Isla Mujeres, Cancun

Afternoon/evening is the perfect time for enjoying a unique Caribbean experience.

One of the most recommended excursions is Isla Mujeres, a paradise just 30 minutes by ferry from Cancun.

You can rent a golf cart to tour the island, visit Garrafón Park, go snorkelling at the Underwater Art Museum (MUSA), or simply relax on Playa Norte, considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Should you decide not to leave Cancun, the afternoon can also offer a choice of unforgettable experiences: take a boat trip on the Nichupté Lagoon, surrounded by mangroves, or try your hand at paddle boarding while admiring the Caribbean sunset.

Night-time: entertainment and relaxation

When night falls, Cancun transforms itself into a paradise of fun.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience, Coco Bongo is the place to be: lights, music, acrobatics, and contagious energy that turns every night into a party.

Another excellent option is Mandala Beach Club, a vibrant seaside venue in the hotel area that is ideal for enjoying good music, sunset cocktails, and a touch of chic on the shores of the Caribbean.

Or, for something more relaxed, try dinner at a beachfront restaurant, then stroll along Boulevard Kukulcán while enjoying the shops, bars, and cosmopolitan ambience.

Useful tips for a day out in Cancun

  • Bring sunscreen and insect repellent. The sun can be strong throughout the year.
  • Wear lightweight, comfortable clothing, but don’t forget a change of dry clothes if you plan to swim.
  • Plan your time. Distances in Cancun may seem short, but traffic in the hotel area can be heavy.
  • Have cash in Mexican pesos. Not all places accept cards or dollars.
  • Book your excursions in advance to make the most of your time.
  • Avoid carrying unnecessary valuables. Enjoy the day with just the essentials.

Cancun is much more than just a beach destination… it’s a place where history, nature, adventure and entertainment intertwine to offer the complete visitor experience.

Although a single day may not be enough to experience all its splendour, this guide will allow you to enjoy the highlights and take a little piece of the Caribbean home with you in your heart.

Whether it’s for exploring Mayan ruins, savouring the local cuisine, or dancing to the rhythm of the vibrant nightlife, Cancun awaits visitors with open arms.

Experience it to the fullest and let every moment remind you why paradise is closer than you think.
