Lobos Island seen from the clouds

Now that the long-awaited summer season is here, it’s time to travel and discover new places. One destination that is sure to captivate is Lobos Island. Located to the north-east of the island of Fuerteventura, it is only open at certain hours to visitors with a reservation. In order to preserve this natural, almost untouched, landscape, the number of visitors is limited to 400 a day. Visitors can also stay for no more than 4 hours, from 10 am to 2 pm or from 2 pm to 6 pm.

Its unique name refers to a colony of monk seals that once lived on the island. However, they were hunted by fishermen, who thought they depleted the marine resources in the area.

For centuries, this small piece of volcanic rocks and sand was the refuge of pirates, a place to hunt, and there was even a factory of natural dyes, which were prized in ancient times.

In this post, we explain how to go, what to do and where to stay if you want to visit Lobos Island.

How to get to Lobos Island

Two boats moored in the port of Lobos Island

To get to Lobos Island, you can board one of the boats that depart regularly from the port of Corralejo, in the north of Fuerteventura. In just 15 minutes, you’ll be on the small island. The price for a return journey is around €16. There’s a discount for residents of the Canary Islands and for children available.

What to see on Lobos Island

This natural landscape of great ecological importance offers a great number of activities and spectacular places to visit. Its special tourist attraction is nature itself. This virgin and untouched volcanic landscape with crystal-clear waters is, without a doubt, uniquely magical.

The ferry will leave you at the small pier in the south of the island. Nearby are the only buildings on the island: a series of houses near the coast where the island’s six sole inhabitants live. Across from these buildings is a bay with turquoise waters and black rock islets.

Sea life in LobosSnorkelling in the waters of Lobos Island

The warm and turquoise waters of Lobos are home to a great diversity of marine flora and fauna that inhabit this natural landscape. Snorkelling is the perfect activity to explore the depths of this idyllic island.

One of the most famous spots to discover the marine life of Lobos is the port of Lobos, a small wooden dock that juts out a few metres above the water. You can also take a spectacular photo for your social media here.

In addition, despite its small size, the west coast of the island hides the longest wave in the Canary Islands, popularly known as “the right wave of Lobos”, between 300 and 500 metres in length. It’s in the area near the La Caldera volcano.

Drop by the Visitors’ Centre to learn about the island’s secrets

Another mandatory stop on your trip to the Lobos Island is right outside the port, in the Visitors’ Centre. Here, you will find the tourism office, where you can get all the information about the island, its history and the different activities you can do there. Multiple panels and maps provide an overview of the island’s history, its natural and environmental wonders and its links with sea lions.

La Concha Beach, white sand and crystal-clear waters

To the west of the port, where the ferry from Fuerteventura disembarks, is the amazing La Concha de Lobos beach. Its name refers to the half-moon shape of the beach, whose silhouette seems to trace out a full circle, giving the illusion of being on a lake rather than on an island.

La Concha beach is irresistible for any visitor. This unique setting is ideal for spending the day with the family, since it is protected by its shape and shallow waters, making it safe for swimming or snorkelling. Your kids can enjoy its crystal-clear waters with no worries!

Family hiking

Another activity you can do is hiking. One of the most popular routes is the climb up the Caldera Mountain, an old volcano a little over 100 metres high that offers stunning views of the island, as well as of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.

The entire summit of the volcano is easily accessible and there is a viewpoint at its western end from where you can take the best photos and rest a little before returning to the town.

Lobos Island is, without a doubt, a unique and unforgettable place that will make your holidays different and special, as you share moments and discover the island with the family. And even though you can’t spend the night on this unique island, you can always enjoy exploring the island of Fuerteventura and our hotels,  Club Jandía Princess and Fuerteventura Princess, located in Morro Jable, an area known for its great tourist appeal and for having one of the best beaches on the island, Jandía.
