Stroll around the beautiful town of Garachico, Tenerife
Considered one of the most beautiful towns on the island, Garachico is known for its cobbled streets, colourful façades and wonderful treasures, both historical and gastronomic. You can also enjoy its beautiful natural pools.
In its heyday the town became the most important commercial port in the Canary Islands, thanks to the sugar and wine trade with Europe and the Americas. All this would change, however, in 1706, when the Trevejo volcano, also known as Arenas Negras, erupted, burying a large part of the town, including the port.
Today, the old town can be explored on foot and has much to admire, including majestic buildings such as the Town Hall and the Casa del Marqués de la Quinta Roja, located in the Plaza de la Libertad, both of which are fine representations of the wonderful local architecture. Special mention should also be made of the Parque de la Puerta de Tierra, which is home to the arch that was once the main entrance to the port; and the Mirador de Garachico, a lookout that offers the best panoramic views of the town.
Garachico is also known for its exquisite fish and seafood dishes, which can be accompanied by excellent local wines. And to round off your experience, why not enjoy one of the delicious desserts prepared by the nuns of The Order of the Immaculate Conception.
