The 10 Best Beaches in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands and is renowned for its endless golden sand beaches, turquoise waters, and breathtaking, unspoilt nature.

Whether you’re keen to have a go at water sports like surfing, build sandcastles with the kids, or simply unwind under a sun umbrella, there’s something for everyone here.

Come along as we discover the 10 most stunning beaches on Fuerteventura!

1. Grandes Playas de Corralejo

Grandes Playas de Corralejo with a view of Isla de Lobos

On the northern coast near the town of Corralejo, the Grandes Playas stretch for 8 kilometres alongside the stunning Dunas de Corralejo Natural Park. The white sand dunes provide a Sahara-like experience, while the clear blue waters are ideal for swimming and water sports. These beaches offer a striking contrast between desert and ocean.
Must-do: Take a ferry to Isla de Lobos for a day of exploring and snorkelling.

2. La Concha (El Cotillo)

Playa de La Concha

Family-friendly paradise with its white sands and calm, shallow waters. Protected by a natural reef, it’s ideal for swimming and relaxing. The beach’s proximity to the village makes it easy to pop out for a bite after a day of sunbathing—especially as fish and seafood are very popular here.
Must-do: Visit the El Tostón Lighthouse and the nearby Museum of Fishing.

3. Garcey

Shipwreck at Playa de Garcey

For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, head to Playa de Garcey on the West Coast, where wild, rugged beauty awaits. This 500-metre beach features a mix of fine sand, rocks, and pebbles, creating a dramatic landscape. It’s also home to the wreck of the American Star, a luxury cruise ship that was caught in a storm in 1994 and eventually ran aground on the rocks. Although only a small part of the wreck is visible now, depending on the tides, the ship remains a reminder of its history and adds a mysterious touch to the setting.

Must-do: Explore the history and wreck of the stranded luxury ship, but watch out for slippery rocks.

4. Playa de Los Ojos

Ojo del Mar at Playa de Los Ojos

Playa de Los Ojos (also known as Playa El Tigre) is a secluded beach on the Jandía Peninsula in southern Fuerteventura. Situated around 6 km northeast of the Punta de Jandía Lighthouse and 8 km from Cofete, this beach is famous for its unspoilt natural beauty and impressive rock formations. With black volcanic sand and a strong surf, it’s perfect for nature lovers and those looking for tranquillity away from the usual crowds. Although swimming is not advised due to strong currents, at low tide, natural pools appear, offering an ideal spot for a refreshing dip.
Must-do: Check out the nearby cave “Ojo del Mar,” an impressive natural formation created by erosion that provides stunning sea views.

5. Cofete

Playa de Cofete

Wild and untamed, Cofete Beach is a must-visit for adventurers. Located on the remote western coast of the Jandía Peninsula, it’s one of Spain’s most unspoilt beaches. Surrounded by mountains, this 12-kilometre stretch of sand feels completely untouched. However, be cautious when swimming due to strong currents and unpredictable waves.
Must-do: Visit the Mirador de la Degollada for breathtaking views of the beach before making your way down.

6. Playa de Barlovento

Playa de Barlovento

Located in the Jandía Peninsula, Playa de Barlovento is a quiet, unspoilt beach known for its wild beauty and sense of seclusion. The windswept landscape, fine golden sands, and dark rocky backdrop make it a perfect spot for naturists and those wanting to escape the crowds. It’s not ideal for swimming due to strong currents, but the peaceful atmosphere and stunning views are well worth a visit.
Must-do: Pack a picnic and relax while taking in the stunning, windswept surroundings—don’t forget to bring your camera!

7. Playa de Butihondo (cerca de Esquinzo)

Playa de Butihondo close to Esquinzo

Nestled in a quieter part of the Jandía Peninsula, Butihondo Beach, along with the nearby town and beaches of Esquinzo, offers a more intimate and laid-back experience. This nearly three-kilometre stretch of fine sand is naturally divided into smaller sections, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. The usually calm waters make it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, or enjoying light water sports, as long as you’re mindful of the sea conditions.
Tip: To make sure you’re near the beach, the Fuerteventura Princess and Club Jandía Princess are just a few metres from Playa de Esquinzo and offer breathtaking sea views.

8. Costa Calma

Costa Calma

This vibrant yet laid-back area in the south of Fuerteventura is ideal for families with children and couples seeking thrilling activities. Here, you’ll discover the Esmeralda and Costa Calma beaches, where you can try out various water sports like windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and snorkelling. At the same time, certain beaches or sections are sheltered from the wind by rocks, dunes, or cliffs, providing a more peaceful atmosphere.
Must-do: For the perfect blend of sheltered, calm beach and windier spots, pack a picnic and spend the day at Playa Esmeralda.

9. Playa del Matorral

Playa de Matorral

This 4-kilometre-long beach near Morro Jable is a popular spot for families and couples. The bustling promenade, lined with numerous shops, restaurants, and leisure facilities, attracts many visitors and enhances the beach’s appeal. The calm waters are ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Additionally, nearby is the protected wetland of Saladar de Jandía, which is home to unique flora and fauna and serves as an important habitat for migratory birds.
Must-do: Enjoy a meal with a view at one of the beachside restaurants

10. Playa de Sotavento

Playa de Sotavento

Located on the southern Jandía Peninsula, Playa de Sotavento is arguably Fuerteventura’s most iconic beach. Stretching for nearly 10 kilometres, this beach is a haven for kitesurfers and windsurfers, thanks to the shallow lagoon that forms at low tide. It offers a unique mix of soft golden sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters, but be prepared for occasional strong winds and limited facilities.

Must-do: Try a kitesurfing lesson or take a peaceful stroll along the expansive shoreline.

Fuerteventura’s beaches offer something for every type of traveller, from the peaceful coves of La Concha to the wild, remote shores of Cofete. Whether you’re after thrilling water sports, family-friendly spots, or secluded areas for relaxation, this island delivers in abundance. With its unique blend of rugged landscapes and serene shores, Fuerteventura is a beach lover’s paradise waiting to be discovered.

Start planning your next trip and dive into the beauty of Fuerteventura’s sun-kissed coastline!
