Bachata in the Dominican Republic: culture that you dance

As soon as the first guitar chords ring out your body starts to move, almost without thinking, because in the Dominican Republic you don’t just hear music, you feel it!
And if there’s one rhythm that defines the cultural essence of the country, it’s undoubtedly bachata.
This is a rhythm that is felt in the soul, lived on the dance floor, and has conquered hearts both within and beyond our borders. More than a dance, it’s the true expression of Dominican identity.
If you are planning a holiday in Punta Cana, get ready to fall in love not only with its beaches, but also with the infectious rhythm that forms part of the cultural heart of the country.
Ready to discover its history and find out where to dance it? Read on!
The origins of bachata: from the barrio to the world

Bachata was born in the working-class neighbourhoods of Santo Domingo in the 1960s.
Its roots are deeply linked to other musical forms; a fusion of bolero, Cuban son, Creole guitar and merengue that merged into emotionally charged urban serenades.
In its early days it was seen as ‘music of bitterness’ and was associated with melancholy, heartbreak, and the poorer areas of the country.
For years it was marginalised because it was seen as ‘low-class’ music, with the result that it was ignored by the upper classes and the media. Far from disappearing, however, it gradually gained strength and popularity on the streets, at village festivals, on local radio stations, and in the hearts of Dominicans.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s artists such as Juan Luis Guerra, with his iconic ‘Bachata Rosa,’ and later Romeo Santos and Aventura, took bachata to the international stage, transforming it into a global phenomenon.
Today, in addition to being a source of national pride, it has been declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO (2019) in recognition of both its artistic value and its role as a symbol of Dominican identity and cultural resistance.
Dancing bachata is much more than moving your feet to the rhythm of the guitar and drums; it’s about expressing emotion, telling stories of love and heartbreak, and connecting with your Dominican identity.
