Earth Day at Princess Hotels Caribe: Our commitment to the planet
Earth Day, celebrated every 22nd of April, is much more than just a date on the calendar; it’s the day when the world unites to commemorate our planet, Earth.
It’s a global reminder of the importance of caring for our planet and protecting the natural resources that sustain life; a date on which to reflect and promote actions that help preserve these resources for future generations.
In the Caribbean, where nature offers us unparalleled landscapes of crystal-clear beaches, lush jungles and unique biodiversity, the need to protect our environment is fundamental.
At Princess Hotels Caribe we understand that tourism should be more than just a source of enjoyment, it should also be an opportunity to contribute to the wellbeing of the environment, which is why we are committed to promoting tourism that causes as little damage as possible and minimises our environmental impact, and responsible practices that contribute to the conservation of this natural paradise.
These include practices and actions that are included in our Corporate Social Responsibility programme, Princess & You 360, which we implement on a daily basis in an effort to minimise our environmental impact.
Sustainability initiatives at Princess Hotels in Punta Cana: caring for the environment year round
At Princess Hotels Punta Cana we firmly believe that caring for the environment should be an ongoing priority.
Which is why, throughout the year, we promote a number of initiatives designed to make our impact on the environment as positive as possible. Some of these include:
- Conservation of natural resources:
- We strive to reduce energy consumption through efficient technologies, such as intelligent air conditioners that turn off when they detect open windows.
- We implement energy efficiency programmes, such as swapping regular bulbs for LED bulbs, and optimise water consumption via reuse systems.
- We also promote the responsible use of resources in our daily operations, such as our towel reuse programme, as every little gesture counts.
- Protection of biodiversity: The Dominican Republic is a natural treasure, and we are committed to preserving it.
- We are actively involved in the conservation of our beaches by means of regular cleaning programmes and raising awareness about the importance of caring for coastal ecosystems
- We also implement projects relating to the preservation of species and native vegetation, as can be seen in our gardens, where, among other initiatives, we carry out regular monitoring to ensure that our activities do not negatively affect the mangroves.
- Eco-friendly practises: In our hotels we promote recycling activities, implement recycling programmes in our various departments, use sustainable products, and strive to reduce the waste generated.
Our sustainability activities on the Riviera Maya
At Princess Hotels Riviera Maya we have adopted a range of sustainable practices designed to minimise our environmental impact and contribute to responsible tourism.
Tourism generates large amounts of waste, which is why we have eliminated single-use plastics, replacing them with biodegradable or reusable materials. We also implement recycling and composting programmes with the aim of separating organic and inorganic waste in order to give them both new uses.
We also seek to promote the consumption of local produce by buying handicrafts and food from small producers via a local Sustainable Market.
We implement sea turtle conservation programmes that include protecting their nests and organising responsible releases. We also work with specialists for the protection and relocation of bees.
We focus on the cleaning of beaches, mangroves and green areas in the Riviera Maya, as this is fundamental in terms of conservation of the ecosystem and sustainable development of tourism in the region.
We promote environmental education and responsible tourism via the implementation of an Eco-tour for our guests, the purpose of which is to raise awareness regarding the importance of the regional flora and fauna. At the end of the tour we invite them to a tree planting session.
Our sustainable initiatives in Jamaica
At Princess Hotels Jamaica, we are committed to both enhancing and expanding our sustainability initiatives.
Some of our key achievements include the development of our Tri-Generational Plant, which allows us to generate electricity, heating, and cooling from a single energy source, as well as our Reverse Osmosis System, which reduces our reliance on local water suppliers.
Additionally, our Mangrove Replanting initiative helps mitigate the environmental impact of our construction efforts.
These groundbreaking initiatives, combined with our everyday sustainable practices, are helping us make significant progress toward our sustainability goals.
We’ve installed sensor-activated lights, set up recycling stations at strategic locations around the resort, and added charging stations for our electric shuttles, which run 24/7 to provide convenient, eco-friendly transportation for our guests.

How can you join the cause?
Travelling responsibly to the Caribbean is essential in terms of preserving its natural beauty and protecting its biodiversity.
Here are some tips and small actions you can take to make a difference, both in the hotel and in your everyday life:
- When inside the resort we encourage you to make responsible use of water by, for example, taking short showers and turning off the tap while brushing your teeth.
- To save energy, turn off lights, air conditioning and electronic devices when you don’t need them.
- Bring a reusable bottle to reduce the use of plastic.
- Use cloth bags instead of plastic bags for shopping or excursions.
- It’s important to respect the local flora and fauna by not feeding or touching wild animals, as this can alter their natural behaviour.
- In your activities outside the resort, we recommend you avoid sunscreens with chemicals that are harmful to coral reefs and opt for ecological options.
- Do not leave rubbish on beaches, in cenotes or in natural parks.
We invite you to share the importance of responsible travel with others and to set an example of sustainable tourism by demonstrating that small actions have a big impact.
At Princess Hotels Caribbean our commitment to the planet is a constant endeavour that extends far beyond Earth Day.
Each of our initiatives reflects our dedication to protecting the natural environment, promoting responsible tourism, and creating a positive impact on the community.
