Earth Hour – Princess Hotels Riviera Maya

Earth Hour

Earth Hour was born as a symbolic gesture to draw attention to the problems of climate change, a simple gesture that consists in turning off the lights of buildings and monuments for 60 minutes.

Since its first edition in Sydney in 2007 (in Spain it was in 2009), the campaign has become one of the world’s largest environmental movements, providing a voice for millions of people and thousands of companies and institutions in more than 200 countries.

Grand Riviera Princess, Grand Sunset Princess and Princess Family Club Riviera have also joined the cause, and on 26 March we carried out a programme of wellness activities to involve our guests and, of course, our staff.

Wellness Experience

Silent Yoga

The first activity of the day was called Silent Yoga, in which some of our staff gathered to experience this new way of doing yoga

The activity consisted in putting on special headphones that block all outside sounds, thus creating a sense of absolute tranquillity, as you are completely isolated from outside noises. This helps increase concentration.

Once the class begins, soothing music starts to play through the headphones, and only the voice of the yoga master is heard, as it guides you through an experience that involves all the senses

During the day, our activities took place in the children’s area, where our youngest guests performed a towel art activity.

The activity had a double purpose: one, to teach children the importance of recycling; and two, to make a figure for themselves and another to donate to a child of one of the associations of our Princess and You 360° on behalf of our young guests.

Night time Experience

In the evening, different activities were prepared to liven up the time when the lights would be switched off

We started with an astronomical observation through a professional telescope, in which our friends from the Astronomical Society of Quintana Roo, A. C. told our guests about the celestial vault and the importance of reducing light pollution in order to be able to observe the night sky.

At 8:30 pm, the countdown was on and we partially switched off the lights of the main square for 60 minutes, the time needed to give our planet a break.

After the countdown, activities such as the LED light show took place, in which a team of dancers moved to the rhythm of the music wearing LED light-up costumes and accessories.

This was followed by the so-called Silent Party. Using a similar method to that of Silent Yoga, guests were given headphones so that each of them can listen to music individually, creating a quiet but fun atmosphere. Those who were not part of the activity just saw a bunch of people dancing without music; the party was happening in their heads, a truly unique experience that helps reduce noise pollution as well

#MoveForThePlanet

Move for the planet

We would like to invite you to join this initiative, because the more we are, the more we will help reduce the environmental impact caused by global warming.

You may not think it’s much, but turning off unnecessary lights, unplugging unused electronic devices and even taking an hour away from your mobile phone are all actions that can help our environment.

If you would like to come and enjoy Earth Hour with Princess Hotels Riviera Maya, the next edition will be on Saturday 25 March 2023.
