Discover Laguna Bávaro – Punta Cana

By | 20 January, 2023 | 0 comments

Laguna Bávaro Punta Cana

No matter how many times you have visited the Dominican country, you can always discover hidden corners that will surprise you.

Today, we want to show you Laguna Bávaro: a place full of nature that will leave you speechless.

Laguna Bávaro, Punta Cana’s paradise

Laguna Bávaro

This is one of the most popular water areas among tourists and Dominicans.

It is about 20 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport, with the possibility of accessing it from Cabeza de Toro. And half an hour from our Princess Punta Cana hotels.

Its waters, of medium transparency, have light green shades, which tend to reddish ochre or greenish brown as we head to the north or northeast cove, respectively.

Laguna Bávaro offers a variety of opportunities and attractions including kayaking, hiking, bird watching, sport fishing, panoramic boating and shopping for high-value artisanal souvenirs.

It is a body of fresh water, of average transparency, sometimes brackish. The normal level of its surface is 0.85 meters above sea level, while the level of its peripheral bottom is 0.45 meters above sea level.

The lagoon is approximately 17 kilometres in circumference and its natural drainage is located in Punta de los Nidos. There are swamps around the lagoon. The average temperature is 26°C to 28°C.

An important element in the climate of the area is the average winds of 12.2 km/h, although it can reach 14 km/h in the winter. This element, together with the action of saltpetre, are factors that have a great influence on the presence and appearance of botanical species near the lagoon.

According to researchers and experts in the area, this lagoon has more than 200 types of plants, mangroves, almost 90 types of birds, 11 types of reptiles and it is the only lake in the world that has this the Cyprinodon fish.

For this reason, it is a protected area since it has endangered species.

What will you find in Laguna Bávaro?

Laguna Bávaro Fishes

Many tourists come to the Bavaro Lagoon to relax, enjoy the landscapes and enjoy some activities that are worthwhile.

For example, you can take a boat trip, go kayaking, to discover the best landscapes in the surrounding area and see some fish that live in this place, without forgetting the possibility of hiking in the surrounding area and bird watching, even practicing sport fishing.

This area has a very wide biodiversity, because birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians live together in this place, in addition to over 200 species of plants. Many of them are endemic, which is a plus when visiting the Lagoon.

It also has a mangrove area to enjoy and take your best pictures of nature in the area with incredible vegetation.

Its waters are not as crystal clear as other parts of Bávaro, but tit still is beautiful, with a greenish colour that matches the rest of the colours in the environment perfectly.

Location of Laguna Bávaro

Macao

It is located in an area between El Macao and Cabo Engaño, visiting the town of Cabeza de Toro during our trip.

Laguna de Bávaro, or also known as Laguna Cuerno, is located in the province of La Altagracia; specifically near the shores of Cabeza de Toro.

Activities in Laguna Bávaro

Kayak

Laguna Bávaro offers a wide variety of activities that you can enjoy when you dare to discover this corner. Almost all of them are focused on ecotourism, so you can enjoy the natural environment without harming it.

One of the most popular activities is bird watching (also by local tourists). You can enjoy watching the flight of 86 species of birds, as well as watching “yaguacines”, pelicans or seagulls.

You need to go with the mentality that you might not be able to see all the species. Nature rules, and there are some birds that can only be seen in the morning, others in the afternoon… or in specific months of the year.

Kayaking is also a must that will enable to discover all the lagoon’s corners, all its flora and all its fauna. Kayak at dusk and you can be amazed by one of the best moments, when the sun gives us its last rays and we can observe the scenery in stunning colours.

If you want more, there are other options such as: hiking, sport fishing, panoramic sailing, shopping in artisanal stores or enjoying the cuisine in restaurants in the area.

From Princess Hotels we recommend that you…

Princess Hotels

Laguna Bávaro is a tourist place that both visitors and Dominicans love, so we want to recommend that you go first thing in the morning be able to enjoy it to the fullest.

And above all, don’t forget to bring sunscreen and good shoes with you.
