Michelin stars shine in Tenerife

By | 19 April, 2024 | 0 comments

Couple eating in a restaurant

Tenerife is renowned for its eternal sunshine, beaches and marvellous landscapes, but this paradise island has much more to offer. It’s become a prestigious foodie destination where you can sample everything from traditional dishes to the most innovative of creations at these Michelin star restaurants in Tenerife.

Read on and hear from Princess Hotels & Resorts how the island’s cuisine has evolved over the years. Come and join us on our culinary journey!

Tenerife: a foodie destination to surprise your senses

In recent years, Tenerife has made a name for itself as a benchmark in haute cuisine. Recognised worldwide, the local cuisine is praised for its high quality standards. Know why?

  • Great professionals
  • Acclaimed cuisine
  • Sustainable, zero-kilometre produce

The island is a diverse and modern tourist destination, wholly committed to sustainability. And it wants to attract travellers who love world cuisine; people looking for a little more than just sun and sand. Does that sound like you? You’re in luck!

What is Tenerife food like?

Limpets dish, Tenerife cuisine

In Tenerife, you’ll find a style of cuisine that stands out for its traditional dishes and flavours; very much linked with the Canary Islands’ identity and the fusion of European, American and African elements. Recipes passed down from generation to generation, recipes that stir up emotions and liven up every dish.

We’re talking about truly unique dishes like the famous potatoes with ‘mojo’ sauce, roasted cheese, ‘fiesta’ meat, ribs and potatoes, and ‘gofio escaldón’ (boiled meat and ‘gofio’; a traditional staple made with wheat or corn flour, inherited from the original Canary Island settlers).

The fish and seafood are similarly delicious; highlights include limpets with mojo, cuttlefish and Canary Island ‘sancocho’ fish stew made with salt fish, stone bass and sea bass. This is a unique, salt-based preservation method. Widely used until the nineteenth century, it’s still common in Tenerife homes today.

The delicious traditional pastries are another scrumptious foodstuff and a reflection of the island’s popular culture. These sweet treats are often made with lots of sugar and local produce like lemons, aniseed (or anise), almonds and sweet potatoes.

Tenerife’s most typical produce

Tenerife is an island full of contrasts. The gastronomy is as diverse as the landscapes, varied altitudes and microclimates, making it a truly unique place.

And let’s not forget the amazing biodiversity; the island is home to large expanses of agricultural land and nature such as Anaga Rural Park. This uniqueness is precisely what gives rise to the typical produce.

The wealth of fruit is a highlight (this island produces the most bananas of all the Canary Islands. As well as others including mangos, papayas and avocados, all produced in a unique way. And the fish and meat (lamb and rabbit, as well as the unique variety of black suckling pig). Plus other local produce like honey, chestnuts, cheese and potatoes.

And let’s not forget the wine! Premium wines with standout sweet and volcanic aromas made from different grape varieties. Whites, reds, rosés and Malvasias… So good, you might find it hard to pick your favourite.

New culinary trends

Tenerife cuisine has continued to reinvent itself and modernise over the years. The new trends have given rise to really creative recipes, perfectly balancing tradition and innovation.

You can see it reflected in recipes from the island’s top chefs, who mix classic Canary Island gastronomy with influences from other cultures.

When you come to the island you’ll be able to sample top-notch cuisine – whether you’re eating at the famous guachinches (places serving popular meals) or acclaimed, Michelin star restaurants. Good food guaranteed!

High-end cuisine

There are seven Michelin star restaurants in Tenerife, all proud winners of the recognition given to the world’s best restaurants by the Michelin Guide.

Seven other restaurants have received a Repsol sun accolade. These are included in the Repsol Guide, which rewards establishments for culinary excellence and the dining experience.

And of course the island boasts its own top chefs. It’s home to the best artisan pastry chef in Spain. Alexis García was awarded the title at the latest Best Master Artisan Pastry Chef of Spain Championship at InterSICOP.
