Windsurf in Fuerteventura
One of the best experiences you can have in Fuerteventura, ‘the island of wind’, is windsurfing in the Atlantic Ocean over waves shaped by the trade winds while enjoying the stunning volcanic landscapes and deserted beaches.
While the island offers favourable conditions for windsurfing practically all year round, the best time to practise this sport in Fuerteventura is in summer, between May and September. Places like Corralejo (in the north), Sotavento, on the east coast of the Jandía Peninsula, Cofete beach and La Pared, on the west coast, and Tarajalejo, northwest of Costa Calma, are paradises for surfers and windsurfers alike.
Costa Calma, in particular, is renowned for Sotavento Beach, which offers conditions for all skill levels. It is also home to the largest windsurfing school in the world, known as René Egli Windsurf & Kitesurf Fuerteventura. Beginners who want to experience risk-free windsurfing will find an ideal lagoon just 300 metres from the shore.
In this wild, beautiful, 3-km-long enclave, the wind blows constantly and the waves are excellent all year round, which is why it has become one of the official venues for the World Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Championships.
