The veneration of the Virgen de la Altagracia extends throughout the Dominican people, as she is the patron saint and protector of the country. Proof of this is the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia built in her honour, whose interior houses an altar with an image of the Virgin dating from the 16th century, originally from Spain.
