Whale Season in the Dominican Republic

They are here, they have arrived, like every year, magnificent whales inthe Dominican Republic, specifically on the beautiful Samaná peninsula.

Every year between January and March, a multitude of humpback whales come to reproduce or give birth in the warm waters of the northeast of the country. Whale calves are born with only a thin layer of fat and are not ready to survive in colder waters, which makes them stay for a reasonable amount of time swimming off the coasts until they are ready to leave.

At Princess hotels in Punta Cana, we are fortunate to have Sea Pro Divers in our water sports centers. A team of professionals who organize wonderful and safe excursions to the Silver Bank, a whale sanctuary in the Dominican Republic, where it is a real pleasure to see the mothers playing with their calves.

You can witness the love songs of the males, who with acrobatic movements try to find their female. If you are thinking of spending a romantic vacation in Punta Cana, Princess Hotels offers you a series of 30% and 50% discounts to help you on your special occasion. It’s your moment to live an unforgettable experience and discover, in addition, a different landscape than what is usual in Punta Cana. Quite a natural adventure.

As we have seen, and heard at Tropical Princess, children come fascinated talking about whales in the Dominican Republic, their amazing jumps, and their immense bodies strolling near the boat, and it’s no wonder; our friends make an extraordinary journey, practically without eating, from the seas of Iceland, Canada, and North America, to the Caribbean coasts, where they give birth in the same waters where their “little one” was conceived, as pregnancy can last up to 12 months!

Humpback whales are part of the great whales. They measure about fifteen meters and weigh an average of 40 tons. They definitely make anyone next to them feel small. They are marine mammals, they breathe air, and, as such, they regularly come to the surface, making their observation possible. They stay apnea for about twenty minutes, on average, but can stay underwater up to forty minutes if the occasion allows. It is definitely a true zoology lesson that helps to understand and visualize the magnificence of the world around us!

The males are tremendously competitive, and seducing the female can be a complicated task, considering that they can be heard by a male within a 35 km radius! In fact, marine biologists who have been studying the area, have seen a female trying to be courted by no less than 25 males… quite a seductress.

It is understandable that with all this activity among the waves and under the sea, it is a strictly monitored excursion by the authorities, and it can only be done through professional companies that have the necessary licenses and knowledge to ensure that this impressive visit does not interfere in any way with the mammals and their life cycle. Of course, in case of doubt, our staff at Bávaro Princess, Punta Cana Princess, Caribe Princess will be more than willing to help and advise you. In all our hotels inthe Dominican Republic, you will find a customer service department, in addition to the aforementioned water sports center where they can help you carry out this excursion responsibly.
