The origin of Los Azulejos

Taking their name from the Spanish word for tiles, Los Azulejos is one of the most magical places you will find in Gran Canaria. With origins dating back thousands of years, the site features rock formations with natural coloured bands that are reminiscent of the colours and designs of tiles.

These “tiles” are actually geological layers of various colours which have been altered by the hydrothermal fluids and the constant eruptions of the Tejeda volcano. Over the centuries, the wind and rain have exposed the green, reddish, bluish and ochre coloured minerals, known as ignimbrites or burning stones.

This place is also closely linked to the aboriginal Canary Islanders, who considered it a sacred site and used it for important rituals and ceremonies.

Hiking in Los Azulejos

For hiking enthusiasts, the area offers numerous routes that will allow you to enjoy this unique geological environment. It is not surprising that this special place has been declared an Asset of Geological Interest by the Instituto Tecnológico Geominero de España.

One of the most iconic routes in the area is the circular path Ruta Degollada de La Aldea – Montaña del Viso – Fuente de Los Azulejos.

It is recommended for hikers with an intermediate level, as it is a 16-kilometre trail, with a difference in altitude of 839 metres and a duration of approximately 6 hours. It starts at Degollada de La Aldea, at the junction of the GC-200 and the village of Tasartico, and offers spectacular views of the village of San Nicolás along the way. For those who dare, it is well worth the effort. All hikers need to apply for authorisation one month in advance to do the part of the route that runs through the Inagua Integral Nature Reserve, so we recommend that you apply in good time.

For less experienced hikers there is the possibility to do a shorter version from the same starting point. It is a medium-difficulty route of 1.7 kilometres and lasts approximately 40 minutes. It ends at the so-called Blue Pools of Veneguera, a set of natural puddles located in the heart of the mountains.

Access to Los Azulejos

The way to Los Azulejos is easy: the rainbow rocks can be reached in around 40 minutes from the south of the island, where our hotels Mogan Princess, Taurito Princess, and TUI BLUE Suite Princess are located.

From the mountain village Mogán, take the GC-200 for about 17 minutes until you see Los Azulejos on your right. Pass the sign “Fuente de Los Azulejos” and after a few metres you will reach kilometre point 49, where parking is available on both sides of the street.
