The Riviera Maya, a dream destination for those seeking relaxation and fun under the sun. However, this corner of the world is much more than just a beach and cocktail destination.

Between the exuberant tropical jungle and the region’s signature rich biodiversity, an exciting world of adventure is hidden. If you are looking to add a touch of adrenaline and exploration to your holiday in the Mexican Caribbean, exciting hiking excursions are waiting for you!

 

1. Hike through the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Immerse yourself in the natural wonder of Sian Ka’an, a biosphere reserve declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

You will be surrounded by an impressive diversity of flora and fauna: from tropical birds to rare plant species, each step is an opportunity to connect with nature in its purest state.

There are several routes depending on your physical condition and the landscapes you would like to visit:

  • The Route of the Cenotes: you will be able to explore the depths of the jungle until you reach a beautiful cenote.
  • The Mangroves Route: walking along this route, you will be able to observe a unique ecosystem, habitat of a great variety of animals and plants.
  • The Beach Route– Great way to take in the incredible views of the Caribbean Sea and coastal wildlife.

2. Ascent to the pyramid of Coba

Embark on a historical and cultural walk as you venture up the ancient pyramid of Coba.

The climb can be challenging, but the panoramic views from the top are absolutely rewarding. In addition, this archaeological site offers you a glimpse of the greatness of the Mayan civilization and its impressive architecture.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience , and in order to fully enjoy it, we want to make some suggestions:

  • Do not forget comfortable clothes and shoes for walking.
  • It is important to take food and water with you.
  • Sun cream and hat or cap to be well protected from UV rays.
  • Do not deviate from the marked path.
  • Be responsible with the environment that surrounds you.
  • Take the time you need to relax and treasure memories that will last a lifetime.

3. Exploring the cenotes of Río Secreto

Delve into a unique underground world as you explore the cenotes of Río Secreto.

Through intricate systems of caves and passageways, you will discover a network of geological wonders. Walking along the stone walkways will allow you to admire stalactites and stalagmites formed over millennia, in a magical setting that will take your breath away.

On this excursion, you will be able to do several hiking trails with different levels of duration and difficulty:

  • The Ruta de los Cenotes: the best known of all, it is a 2.5 kilometre walk. And while you go through it, you will be able to discover 3 different cenotes.
  • The Jungle Route: another alternative route of 4 kilometres that passes through the Mayan jungle, it has a greater difficulty but the views of the jungle and the cenotes are not to be missed.

4. Expedition to the Mayan Ruins of Muyil

Mayan Ruins of Muyil

Explore the ancient history of the region with a hike to the Mayan ruins of Muyil. Following the carefully laid out paths, you will find yourself surrounded by ancient structures and temples.

The peace and serenity of this place will transport you back in time, while you walk among the remains of a civilisation that left an indelible mark on the Riviera Maya.

All routes are well signposted and are easy to follow. Here we recommend some of the most popular:

  • Temple Route: The most popular, as it takes you up to the main Temple, the highest point of the ruins. Path of only 1 kilometre that you can easily explore.
  • Platform Route: through this route you will be able to reach the great patio of ceremonies and events of the Mayans, the Main Platform. This route is somewhat more difficult but still remains easy for all visitors, 2 km and a 40-meter drop.
  • Cenote Route: the longest of the 3, with a 3-kilometre route. At the end of the road, a cenote located in the jungle awaits you, where you can swim or snorkel.

5. Hiking in the Punta Laguna Nature Reserve

Get ready for a close encounter with wildlife as you venture into the Punta Laguna Nature Reserve.

Along the trails, you’ll be able to see howler monkeys, spider monkeys in their natural habitat, and maybe even spot a family of curious coatis. This experience will connect you with the local fauna in an intimate and moving way.

The 2 most popular trails in the place are:

  • Laguna Trail: 2-kilometre walk that takes you to the Lagoon, where you can swim, fish or relax on the shore.
  • Sendero de la Selva: a 4-kilometre route to discover the depths of the jungle, and where you can find all the fauna mentioned above.

6. Aktun-Chen Jungle Adventure

Discover an impressive and little-explored jungle in the Aktun-Chen nature reserve.

Here, you will have the opportunity to walk trails that meander through the dense vegetation and will take you to cenotes and mysterious caves.

In addition, you will be able to observe different species of birds and learn about the rich biodiversity of the region.

The most popular route of all is:

  • The Subterranean River Route: a 6-kilometre path to an underground river, beautiful and calm, where you can see the jungle from another perspective.
